What company has the best skincare products?  Well, that depends on who you ask.  Personally, I consult the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC).

WATCH OUT  for Harmful Ingredients

In my opinion, the best skincare products should not contain ingredients that either cause or are strongly suspected of causing cancer.  But, many of the popular brands do.  For example, Neutrogena makes an oil-free foundation that comes in a variety of shades.  Ingredients in the product have been linked to cancer, reproductive problems, allergies and a number of other health problems.

Environmental groups have petitioned the cosmetic industry for years to stop using these harmful ingredients.  But, since they can’t get legislation past cosmetic industry lobbyists, they decided to give consumers a way to found the safest and best skincare products on their own.

Read the Label

The EWG created a searchable database called Skin Deep.  At the site, they rate the safety of cosmetics based on the ingredients that they contain.  You might think that Avon has the best skincare products, but if you go to the Skin Deep site, you will learn that Avon’s skin clearing lotion contains ingredients that have been linked to cancer, as well as skin, eye and lung irritation.

As far as safety is concerned,  best skincare products are made by companies that have signed the CSC’s “compact for global production of safe health and beauty products”.  The CSC also has a searchable data base where you can see if your favorite companies have signed the compact. 

Big Names – Big Prices

I decided to look for some of the most expensive designer names, because, of course they claim to have the best skincare products .  How about Christian Dior?  No, apparently the company does not believe that a product that you use on your skin everyday should be safe.

I had always thought that designers like Helena Rubenstein, Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent had the best skincare products, since the prices were so high.  My sister used to use only Elizabeth Arden cosmetics and fragrances.  But, none of these designer names are on the safe list.

You might think that the names that we “trust” the most would definitely sign the compact and be “pro” safety.  But, I looked for Ponds, Vaseline, Clinique, Revlon and Proctor & Gamble.  Obviously, they don’t make the safest and best skincare products, because, thus far, they have refused to sign the compact.

What does the compact ask companies to do?  Simply to meet the formulation standards and deadlines set by the European Union Directive in 2004, to replace hazardous compounds with safer alternatives within the next three years.  It doesn’t seem like much to ask of a cosmetic company.  You know why they won’t do it?

It’s the Money

Safer ingredients cost more.  They would have to raise the prices on some of their already outrageously high priced products or cut their advertising budget.  Most of these companies would not survive without advertising.  Their products are not good enough to have a “word of mouth” reputation.

The best skincare brand will not cause adverse reactions. It is safe for anyone to use, regardless of their complexion type. The creams in the line counter the affects that time has on our faces and the outside of our bodies. The deep cleansing mask removes excessive oils and clears the pores, without causing irritation.

Some of the worst skincare reviews are for anti-aging products. So, always do your diligent research. Relying on skincare reviews to give you the answer is just not a good idea. Remember that the best skincare brand will contain only natural ingredients; no artificial preservatives, additives or fragrances.

Using a dab of cologne or perfume is usually okay, but the chemicals used to make fragrances are common allergens and irritants. You don't want to rub them all over your face.

First and foremost, let's narrow down your choices, shall we? You want to get an effective anti aging skincare product that works well with your skin, right? Every woman starts to become interested in skincare as she ages and sees those fine lines forming around her eyes and mouth. Those wrinkles and sagging skin that just doesn't glow like it used to. And many women start to realise that natural skincare products are by far the best skincare products. But how do you find the best natural skincare products?

However the first question to ask is why would you want to use natural skincare products? What does "natural" mean and what is the difference between "natural" skincare products and other skincare products?

There is no formal definition of "natural" when it comes to skincare and anti aging products. However to me "natural" means "safe" skincare products.

Safe? Aren't all skincare products safe? Why would they be unsafe?

Sadly the answer is that not all skincare products and anti aging products (or cosmetics or beauty products for that matter) are safe. It is gradually becoming known that many skincare and anti aging products and cosmetics, perfumes, body care and beauty products contain ingredients that may in fact be damaging to your skin or even your health. I first became aware of this when my young daughter had a terrible skin reaction to her first use of cosmetics when she had her first ballet concert, and have been interested in this ever since.

Many ingredients that go into our skincare products and cosmetics in the US are banned in other countries, like European countries. But here it's perfectly legal to use suspect ingredients in our skincare and anti aging products and the FDA doesn't regulate against this. The problem is so bad that there are whole organizations set up to try and foster the manufacture of safe skincare products and cosmetics.

I'll give you an example. A recent study found lead in over 50% of big brand lipsticks tested. Scary isn't it?

So many people are turning to natural skincare products and cosmetics to find safe products. And of course they want to find the best natural skincare products because the companies that make skincare products from all natural, and safe, ingredients, aren't the big brand name companies.

Most companies that make natural skincare products have signed the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics" to evidence their commitment to producing safe products. And these natural skincare products are usually much more effective than their less safe but more well known cousins which you see advertised on TV and on the shelves of the stores.

That's because the companies that make the best natural skincare products are small niche companies. They can't compete on marketing budget, so they compete on product quality. To survive they need to produce top shelf products so that customers come back over and over again. So they don't need to spend up big on TV advertising.

There are excellent natural skincare products made up into a complete scientific skincare system that are available to buy and are safe to use, and extremely effective. They aren't made by the big name skincare companies or cosmetics companies, but if you manage to find them they are cost comparable or even cheaper than the big brands, and safe to use.
