A feast of early summer flavours this week. In spring I visited the Aosta Valley, which lies on the border between Switzerland and Italy. Among the region’s delicious cured meats, polenta and chestnuts, I had an intense and heated affair with fontina cheese.

How to Prevent Vaginal Itching

Before we take up the question of what is vaginal itching, we need to know what is meant by it.  Vaginal itching is the irritation of the skin of the vagina and the surrounding area that is the vulva. The itching may cause a desire to scratch the affected area.

Some of the causes of vaginal itching can be traced to detergents or fabric softeners that are still found in underclothes. That means you have not rinsed them well. The other causes could be that you allergic to certain sprays, creams, douches and contraceptive foams. Another possible could be vaginal yeast infection where there is a curd like discharge. It has been proved that vaginal yeast infections can also be caused by birth control pills, condoms, diabetes and a weakened immune system. Vaginitis also causes itching and inflammation and could be caused by a sexually transmitted infection.   Menopause can also bring on vaginal itching as during menopause the wall become thin and there is less lubrication so sex can be the cause here.

But there are ways to prevent vaginal itching and this is how you prevent it:

• Do not use perfumed toilet soaps or perfumed toilet paper.
• Do not use feminine sprays and douches.
• If you have come back from a swim, change out of your wet clothes immediately. The same applies if you have had a workout at the gym.
• Make sure you clean the vaginal area by washing front to back after urinating or a bowel movement.
• Make sure your genital area is always clean and dry.
• See that your blood sugar is down and is kept down at all times.
• Always use cotton underwear.
• Do not have sex till the problem is cleared up.
• Make sure you and your partner use condoms so that you will not spread it and more important be infected by an STD.
• Try not to scratch the affected area.
